Cricket: Edge storm to another victory

clock

As the season passes the half-way point in the ECB Cheshire Premier League, Edge have played all their opponents and now face the reverse fixtures, with Oxton being Edge’s first opponents in the second-half. A trip to the Wirral last Saturday therefore saw Edge facing erratic opponents who have had several very good results but some really poor ones as well.

Edge batted first and mounted a good steady start with opener Mark Currie again in great form against opponents who he always seems to excel against. It was the same old story again for the home side as they toiled to try to remove Currie, which they eventually did, but not until he had scored yet another century against them. He racked up 116 off 131 balls including 16 fours, and put on 117 for the second wicket with Richard Wilkinson.

Wilkinson made 59 as Edge piled on the runs and were eventually able to declare at 263 for 6 after 55 overs, taking maximum batting bonus points along the way. Edge looked to be good favourites at tea but a surprise result could not be ruled out. Oxton’s reply looked to be on track whilst Cheshire batsman Lee Dixon was at the crease but when he fell to the slow left-arm spin of Mark Warnes, the result never looked in doubt. Skipper Jason Whittaker was again in the wickets with another three here and Warnes also chipped in with three, whilst off-spinner Charlie Reid took a very useful 2 for 18 off 7 overs. Edge wicket-keeper Adam Worrall is now the leading wicket-taker in the Cheshire Premier League with 25 after 12 games.

Oxton were eventually all out for 168 with Edge taking a maximum 25 points from the victory and moving up the table to third place. Although Neston are runaway leaders in the league, recent results suggest that the top of the table will become tighter as champions Oulton Park and Alderley are well placed to mount a challenge with vital matches coming up for all three sides in July.

The following day Edge went out of the National Knock-Out to Birmingham Premier League side Walmley by 62 runs in a match they batted reasonably well but did not bowl up to their usual standards.

Next weekend Edge have a double header, when they face local rivals Toft in the league at home before a trip to Chester in the Cheshire Cup the following day.

Final Score Cheshire County Premier League: Alderley Edge 263-6 Oxton 168 all out Edge won by 95 runs.
