Paralympic champion shares the secrets of his success

Last week the Alderley Edge Community Primary School had a fantastic time celebrating National Sports Week, during which the children had opportunities to try out many different and new sporting activities, including; tag rugby, golf, climbing, archery, trampolining, athletics, dodgeball, nightline and GPS orienteering to name but a few.

Throughout the week the children also competed in an interhouse competition to see which house could build up the most number of laps of the playground track with the winning house being Tatton.

The Year 4, 5 and 6 children travelled to Wilmslow High School to compete in an inter school athletics meeting with several of the children achieving first place in the events and on Friday a special assembly was held, celebrating the successes of the week.

Finally, on Friday afternoon Alderley Edge Community Primary School were lucky enough to be visited by Tim Prendergast, who has represented his home country New Zealand in three Paralympics Games, most recently captaining the New Zealand team in Beijing.

Despite only having 5% of his vision left, Tim is a middle distance runner who won gold at the Athens Games in 2004 for 800 metres and he achieved 2 silver medals in the 800m and 1500m in the 2000 Sydney Games.

He spoke to the Year 5 and 6 children about his achievements, what it takes to be a paralympic champion and how important it is to always be physically fit.

Headteacher, Mr Chris Perry said "This was one of the best weeks I have experienced at our school with so many children taking part in so many sports and achieving so much. The idea was to give the children opportunities to try new sports and inspire them to go on and achieve great things in the future - this target was surpassed!!

'I was delighted with the way the children competed, their team spirit and great sense of fair play. I am a very proud Headteacher having watched our children compete in the way they did during National Sports week."

Tim Prendergast was amongst 8 Olympic and Paralympic Champions, who along with the Major and Mayoress, took part in the launch of The Macclesfield School Sport Partnership Young Ambassador Project 'On yoUR Marks, Get Set, Go' at Wilmslow High School on Friday morning.

The project is aimed at raising the profile of the 2012 Olympic Games and inspiring all people, young and old, to become more active.
