The whole community at Alderley Edge Community Primary School came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
As part of this important occasion, the children learned about the significance of VE Day, with special visits to St Phillips' and St James' church for a presentation by the Alderley Edge History Group supported by special guests about the impact of the war on local families.
The children also enjoyed a visit from 'Mimmi' Jackson, who shared her personal experiences as a child during the war. The stories provided a unique perspective and brought history to life for the children.
The school also took on a nostalgic atmosphere as children and staff arrived dressed in wonderful 1940s-inspired outfits, transporting everyone back to 1945. The occasion was marked by a performance of the Last Post by Dr. Tim Sparks, which set a reflective tone for the day.
In the classrooms, children worked on their "Beacons of Light," a project inspired by the VE Day 80th anniversary theme, Together We Stand. The beacons symbolise national unity and the light of peace that followed the war. Families were encouraged to continue the tradition by lighting these beacons at home on Thursday 8th May, in line with the national lighting of beacons around the country.
Finally, a VE Day-themed lunch was served in the hall, complete with 1940s music and Union Jack biscuits, creating a festive atmosphere. The entire school came together in the afternoon for a picnic on the playground, where the children were entertained with live 1940s music, and Year 6 children read poems to commemorate the occasion.
Mrs Walsh, Head Teacher, said " I would like extend my heartfelt thanks to the local community and Alderley Edge History Group, and also to the children for their enthusiasm and participation. It was a wonderful event that honoured the past while celebrating the strength and unity of the community today."
