Alderley Edge School for Girls has been awarded the British Council International Award, Intermediate Level, in recognition of its commitment to developing linguistic skills, working on collaborative projects with schools overseas and raising awareness of global issues.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department at AESG has been working on several initiatives within school to engage pupils and additional opportunities to practise their languages. The School has recently created partnerships with a number of overseas schools including partner schools in Taiwan, Germany, Spain and France.

Pupils at AESG have benefited from international-linked activities such as study trips to Barcelona, Madrid and Paris, medical work experience in Germany, pen pals in France and a very successful Chinese Club during which our pupils share their knowledge of Cantonese calligraphy, Chinese culture, music and food with their peers.

The British Council particularly commended the school's Language Leaders programme in which students visit local primary schools within the area to teach younger pupils in the community languages including Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Urdu.

Stephen Hull, Senior Project Manager at the British Council, said: "Alderley Edge School for Girls' international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition in the form of the British Council International School Award, Intermediate level. I particularly liked the Language Leaders activity when your students visited ten primary schools to teach younger students the languages they speak. This should encourage younger pupils to think more about both learning languages and also learning about other cultures."

"Moving your students out of their comfort zones, breaking down cultural barriers, challenging stereotypes and encouraging self-discovery is a great thing to do, this should help their future careers and enable them to contribute positively to global society. Well done and we look forward to seeing you continued good work and commitment."

Nicola Smillie, Alderley Edge School for Girls Headmistress, added: "We are thrilled to receive such a prestigious award. As a school, our aim is to empower girls as strong women in the 21 Century workplace and to take their place as global citizens. By fostering links with schools across the globe we widen the girls' horizons and inspire them to discover new culture and languages.

"We are proud to have AESG alumnae working throughout the world; working in foreign embassies or as marketing professionals and lawyers, all speaking languages that they have learned during their time at school. This is a testament to our successful MFL Department and the passionate staff who inspire our students."

Alderley Edge School for Girls is a leading Independent school for girls age 2 to 18 set within the heart of Cheshire. The school provides a challenging and stimulating learning environment as well as creating a supportive, nurturing and happy school in which to learn.
