Reception and Sixth Form students at Alderley Edge School for Girls have restarted their successful and regular visits to Brookview Care Home to re-establish their friendships with the care home residents.
Our Reception Class and Sixth Form visit Brookview every week with the care home welcoming pupils in to engage with residents in informal chats and activities. These visits were initiated by the School's Chaplain, Lenny McEvoy, who previously took the pupils to visit the care home regularly before the Pandemic in 2020.
During the last couple of weeks, Sixth Form students have had discussions with the residents, asking what advice they would give to their younger self. One resident told the students to "never give up on their dreams" and to "always be yourself". They have also played board games and completed jigsaws with the residents.
Alderley Edge School for Girls' Reception class has equally found the visits both enjoyable and rewarding taking part in activities such as a music session during which the residents and girls sang songs together. They also played a parachute and ball game and have just recently decorated cupcakes together.
Headmistress, Mrs Smillie, said: "Our Sixth Form students and Reception Class have been visiting Brookview Care Home this term and will continue to do so over the coming weeks and months. It's been so heart-warming to see how naturally our pupils have begun to build relationships with the residents, showing kindness and care. Both residents and pupils benefit immeasurably from these visits and we are delighted with the number of girls who wish to participate."
Alderley Edge School for Girls' Chaplain, Lenny McEvoy, added: "Our visits to Brookview Care Home encourage the girls to learn from a young age how to be part of a community, develop their spirituality and a deep compassion for others. They use their communication skills to develop socially and emotionally, forming respectful relationships, and thinking about others. Our parents have also commented on the smiles the girls display in the photographs with the residents and the new friendships they have made."
