Sinkhole opens up on London Road

A sinkhole has opened up on London Road this afternoon, just outside of the Waitrose car park.

Police and an officer from Cheshire East Highways are at the site and have surrounded the hole with cones. The road currently remains open, though lorries and buses are having some difficulty passing through.

The Highways Officer said "The sink hole is about 4ft deep and about 2 to 3 metres wide. I am not sure of the cause, it might be a drain."

He added "We may need to close the road, they are hoping to fill it with stones as a temporary measure."

Councillor Craig Browne provided the following update at 16.45.

"I have now spoken to CE Highways and they have taken a decision not to close this section of London Road.

"As a sewer collapse is suspected, the matter has been passed on to United Utilities, who will be sending a team out to investigate within the next two hours.

"Temporary traffic lights are going to be installed in the meantime. Once I have more information, I will provide an update."

Sink hole - pot hole - it’s just yet another repair the highways department should have been on top of before it got to this stage if they inspected and repaired the roads properly

Temporary traffic lights were erected this morning just before 7.

It looks like a fairly substantial hole. Hoping it will be quickly fixed otherwise total chaos will ensue!

Stephen,

However inefficient we think councils are no one can predict sink holes.
