Cheshire East Highways carried out an assessment a couple of months ago to determine whether a zebra crossing was required on Ryleys Lane.
Cllr Craig Browne has been working on getting a crossing installed between Eaton Drive and the layby in front of the Ryleys School, to help to create a safe route to school both from the residential estate and through the playing fields.
They took an average of the four busiest hours of the day and various weightings are given as to whether pedestrians are under 16, unaccompanied or senior citizens.
Cllr Craig Browne said "The figures have come back roughly 600 vehicles per hour but unfortunately the number of pedestrians during the same period varied from 39 at the top end to only 12 at the lowest end so unfortunately that doesn't really justify the need for a zebra crossing at that location so that won't be going ahead."
Cllr Geoff Hall commented "Of course when you don't have a pedestrian crossing on a busy road people are less likely to walk aren't they."
"I did try and explain this to the schools and they were very good at working with me in terms of writing letters to highways and helping with a petition but they weren't prepared to organise schools crossings at that point in the absence of a formal crossing which I understand but effectively that it what needs to happen in order to demonstrate the need. So its a shame."
Going forward Cheshire East Council has agreed to look at other measures.
Cllr Craig Browne added "I've asked them to look at a refuge, a central reservation which means people only have to cross half way before they've got somewhere safe to wait until they cross the rest of the road. So they are following that one up."

Spend the money on refreshing the "keep clear" markings on the roads and that way the traffic might flow a bit better at the major junctions!
