Reader's Letter: Are modern cars not fitted with indicators?

roundbaout

I know this was published couple of years ago but we seem to have a lot more cars on the road with NO Indicators.

Is it an optional extra, or are they not fitted on modern cars?

It beggars belief the drivers on roundabouts and turning left have no idea that that little stalk, behind your steering wheel, makes the orange lights flash.

This lets us all know where you are going!

This also enables the rest of us to pull out, or turn ourselves. Instead of waiting for lazy drivers who ignore us.

Going left, even leaving roundabouts make the orange lights work.

You should wait anyway, even if cars turning left or on roundabouts are indicating. Just because the indicator is flashing doesn't always meen they will turn.

Thanks, Barry, for voicing a comment that all safety-conscious drivers must agree with. I drive a number of elderly passengers to hospital appointments, and we all agree about the bad manners exhibited by drivers who fail to indicate their exit from roundabouts, holding up the flow of traffic on to the roundabout. New Zealand has a sensible reminder, with signs on roundabouts indicating "BLINK OFF".

Chris Jones is correct. How many times have you seen the driver of a vehicle "Indicating" their intention to turn, but who don't ! It is an indication, not a commitment and regrettably there are a lot of lazy / poor drivers who either don't use indicators at all or who do use them and fail to take the turn. We should always remain alert. It's almost as bad as the huge number of drivers who fail to use headlights in fog !!

Blimey, complaints about the poor standard of driving on local roads. Who'd have thought it? Now where did I put my gun? There's some fish in a barrel I've got to shoot....
