A section of the A34 Handforth bypass will be closed for 4 nights this week as the next phase of works on the A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road begins.

Work will commence on Storeys Way, from Handforth Retail Park to Stanley Green Roundabout, where they will start installing temporary traffic management, erecting signs and removing and installing new road markings.

Narrow lanes will also be installed with a 30mph speed limit.

During those 4 nights from Tuesday, 1st September, to Saturday, 5th September, the A34 from Storeys Way to Stanley Green roundabout will be closed from 8pm to 6am. The eastbound and westbound exit slip roads, Stanley Green Road and the A555 east and westbound exit slip roads will also be closed during these times.

The works are weather and resource dependent and may need to be cancelled at short notice.

Construction of the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road commenced in March 2015 and will last for approximately two and a half years. The road is expected to be open in late 2017.

The scheme is planned to provide 10 kilometres of new 2-lane dual carriageway on an east-west route from the A6 near Hazel Grove, via the 4 kilometres of existing A555 to Manchester Airport and the link road to the M56.

The scheme, which bypasses heavily-congested district and local centres - including Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Hazel Grove, Handforth, Poynton, Wythenshawe, Gatley and Heald Green, incorporates 7 new and 4 improved junctions, 4 railway crossings, 6 substantial retaining walls and a parallel shared cycle/pedestrian path.
