A beautiful garden in Alderley Edge will be open to the public this weekend to help raise money for nursing and caring charities.

34 Congleton Road will be open from 12 noon until 6pm on Saturday 31st May and Sun 1st June as part of The National Gardens Scheme (NGS).

Nicholas Clayton, local gardener and vintage cycle enthusiast, maintains this one-acre west-facing garden with, on a good day, views to the Welsh mountains. Mature rhododendron, magnolias and wisteria, together with clematis, hellebores and a range of unusual herbaceous plants and young specimen trees.

People are being urged to visit this weekend as this could be the last time this garden is open to the public.

Nicholas commented "I think this will be the swansong, apart from the Wilmslow Wells garden day on 28 June. I have enjoyed an Indian Summer of gardening pleasure since retiring in 1999 and hope the new owners of Cheriton may continue to open for the NGS and develop the garden in new directions."

Entrance is £4 for adults and children are free.

George Plumtre, NGS Chief Executive said "Exploring a beautiful garden has to be one of the most enjoyable ways of raising money for charity."

Founded in 1927, the NGS has donated £42.5 million to nominated charities. In the last 10 years alone, NGS has donated over £22 million and it is the biggest ever donor to both Macmillan Cancer Support (£13 million) and Marie Curie (£5 million).

Over 3,800 gardens will open this year. In the Cheshire and Wirral section of the NGS, there are 91 gardens which will open on approximately 250 occasions.

Visit the National Gardens Scheme website for a full list of participating gardens, which includes: Free Green Farm in Lower Peover and Peover Hall & Gardens in Over Peover which are both open this weekend.

Local gardens open in June include Tatton Park (11th June), Ashmead in Macclesfield (14th and 15th June), Hare Hill in Prestbury (22nd June) and Hunter's Croft in Mottram St Andrew (22nd June).
