Sun shines on May Fair celebrations

The weather was absolutely spectacular today for the 2014 Alderley Edge May Fair which proved to be another hugely successful community event.

The sun shone beautifully as hundreds gathered in the village to the enjoy the parade, featuring the wizard and his band of knights, a samba band, stilt walkers, brass band, town crier, jazz band, tractors, hockey players and fancy dress contestants.

Our May Queen, 11-year-old girl Lucy Peers, was accompanied her two princesses, Tess Foster aged 8 and Maggie Foster aged 6, who travelled in a horse drawn carriage.

On arrival at the park, Lucy declared the Alderley Edge May Fair officially open and the fun began with entertainment provided throughout the afternoon in the two arenas.

Entertainment at the Wizard's Arena included the fun dog show, tug of war, falconry display and performances from Sylk Dance Academy, Manchester Phoenix Pipe Band, and Woodford Dog Training Club.

Whilst over on the Golden Triangle Stage Alderley Edge Primary School Choir, Fast Exit from Wilmslow High School, Pepper Town Jazz Band and Moss Rose Community Band performed along with open mic sessions.

Winners in the fancy dress competition were Felix (18 months), Vecaiya, Thomas, Lilly and Polly (all age 7) and Ella (9).

Amongst the many attractions in the park there was hockey coaching, crazy golf, zorb balls, a bungie trampoline, bouncy castles, fairground rides, Punch n Judy and a whole host of stalls from local businesses and organisations.

For the first time, the May Fair celebrations kick-offed on the Friday evening this year with a round robin bowling competition in the park which was won by Judith Carris, followed by a 4-mile fun run which was won by Rob Downs from Wilmslow in a time of 23 minutes. Afterwards the crowds were entertained with open mic sessions organised by The Yard.

For the 4th consecutive year the May Fair was organised by Alderley Edge resident Christine Munro and a small group of volunteers including Geoff Hall, Paul Marshall and Margaret Smith.

They put in an enormous amount of time and effort into creating this fantastic free event for the community.

Organiser Christine Munro said "I was really thrilled with the day. The sun shone and there were lots of happy faces, lovely comments from people, and there were so many people!!

"There are lots of thankyou's to say, particularly to Geoff Hall who has done so much for the May Fair, the committee will really miss him next year, to Paul Marshall our treasurer, Paul Chilton who organised the Fun Dog Show and Margaret Smith who collected all the fabulous raffle prizes from local traders and friends of the May Fair. Then all the volunteers who turned up on the day and helped make it all happen, a big thank you to all of them.

"It is a huge undertaking to organise this event but when it all comes together on the day it is a wonderful feeling of achievement for us. And of course it wouldn't have been the same without our celebrity guest - THE SUN!!!"

A huge thank you to Christine and everyone involved for their hard work in organising another successful May Fair. You gave my daughter Lucy (Rose Queen) a fantastic day that she will always remember. There was a lovely atmosphere and where else can you bump into so many people you know in one day?!
