End of an era for Alderley restaurant

photo-18

A London Road restaurant is preparing to close after trading for more than 35 years in the village.

The Alderley Rose Chinese restaurant, which also offered a takeaway service, will close its doors on Saturday 7th September.

The lease is due to expire on the property, located on the corner of London Road and Brown Street, and Anne and Tom Zerenka have decided not to renew it.

Tom's father Brian Zerenka, who helps out in the restaurant from time to time, said "The restaurant has been here for more than 35 years and the lease is up at the end of September.

"We don't want to extend the lease as the restaurant is quite quiet. It is not easy running a business, this is a posh area and our restaurant is quite old style."

Brian, who is nearly 70, added "The family haven't got any firm plans of the future, we just want to settle everything up here first and we will think about the future afterwards."

With businesses like PizzaExpress keen to open in the village, but unable to succeed with their plans because permission for a change of use from retail to restaurant for the unit at the corner of London Road and Stevens Street was refused, we wonder whether this unit will prove popular - given it has an A3 licence to sell food and drink?

The atmosphere at The Alderley Rose was always a bit depressing, but the food was quite good. ........... so, no more "Chinese" in the Village, or Chinese Take Away / Delivery Service.
Yet another icon lost ........... what with losing The Mandarin a couple of years ago. Pity !!!

After so many years in the village I wish them the best of success for the future. As for what happens next I would really like to see another Chinese resteraunt take its place especially when there isn't a decent one anywhere near the village. To be fair Pizza Express would probably do well but it doesn't offer anything better than we can already get in the village and there is one just 5 minutes down the road.

Another chinese restaurant would be desirable, but would need a 'formula' to attract people where the current chinese restaurant hasn't worked...

Pizza Express would be the alternative option.

Last thing we want is another empty eyesore for the next 4 years, like the place opposite

I won't pretend to shed a tear at the imminent loss of a restaurant that was so visibly dying slowly in the last decade. So sad for the old owners. But, oh! horror at more pretentiously "posh food. Don't we need in this village some more genuinely honest italian, or chinese, or indian food? Let's leave the pizza baking, selling and eating, to those who lure themselves in considering it as the pinnacle of sophistication.

We don't need another 'Chain' Pizza restaurant in the village that's for sure...Gusto does that very well!
What we do need is a decent 'Tampopo' or 'Wagamama' type/style restaurant, that serves the best of Japanese, Chinese, Thai etc...
Personally I'd love NOBU to open up here...but that won't ever happen, however 'POSH' people think the village is:-)... We can live in hope!
As long as it's not another charity shop!!!

My son and I are big sushi fan, we would love a sushi bar at the village with a Japanese chef. Also a Teppanyaki restaurant in the village would be fun too!

Another cool concept is 'Pop up restaurant' where the premises would have the kitchen fully kitted out and each month a new chef and team would rent the venue and dazzle us with their culinary skills!

Ohhh a Tampopo would be wonderful. If not that a Man Zen with a huge eat all you like buffet.

Starving now and got a meal at Tampopo on my mind.

Perhaps an "up-market" Sushi Bar or hopefully a Greek Restaurant which would be my personal favourite.

What we don't want is another cafe bar to encroach onto the pavement or any more charity shops, but then again we don't want to become another empty "eyesore".

Good luck to the family leaving the Alderley Rose, I've had many a good meal there over the years.

Nooooo! 'The Rose' is an icon of Alderley! We used to go there back in 1960s when Mr Lee owned it and ran it with his daughters. It was always busy back then, but in recent years it has seemed to be less so and I have often wondered how it survives. It seems it no longer can.

I always thought 'The Rose' would be a constant; as the village changed beyond recognition it was always there as a reminder of an older, gentler, less brash Alderley. I shall be very sad to see it go.

I can remember dining at the Alderley Rose prior to 1968 which makes it nearly 45/50 years. Mr Lee and his family were the first owners. When I worked for ICI at Alderley Park I can remember enjoying the lunch time special of 3 courses for only 50 pence or 10 shillings as it was in those days.

What a shame to see a local business close, eaten there a few times and used the takeaway, always had a good meal. I would imagine the future of the building would be fairly secure, the fact it already has A3 use (restaurant and cafe) will be a big draw for a company. ideally an independent restaurant would be nice, one that complements our already great eating places. However it could become a Retail shop (A1) or financial / professional Services (A2) without any need for a change of use planning permission which again makes it attractive to new business. Incidentally any shops that currently have a Retail shop (A1) or financial / Professional (A2) planning permission will now be able to open as an A3 (restaurant or cafe) for 2 years without needing any change of use permission so this could be good for making any of those other empty units more attractive.

Lovely people but it had had its day. The food was terrible and the ambience not unlike a dusty old library. It was empty for a reason and it has not ceased trading because it was wildly successful. My vote would be for a Thai restaurant.....but suspect sadly that Pizza Express will take the site.

There is a fantastic Thai restaurant half a mile down the road. I believe they accept the same currency as restaurants in Alderley

Each meal I've had at the Alderley Rose in the last 25 years since I've lived in the village has been pretty dire. It is sad for the owners leaving after such a long time but a restaurant only attracts clients if it serves decent food in a nice atmosphere at a decent price for what you get...

The Chilli Banana serves fabulous food and so survives despite not great surroundings.

It would be nice to have another Chinese restaurant - maybe the owners of the Flame and Wok or one of their chefs could be persuaded to move in, they serve the best Chinese food for miles around!

But anything including Pizza Express is infinitely better than another empty shop unit like the one on the corner of Stephens Street which sits there like the spectre at the feast year after year...

Very sad to hear this news as I have used The Rose regularly over recent years for both eat-in and take-away meals; I always appreciated what I will call the unpretentious nature of the restaurant, although I suppose that hasn't made it universally popular. I am very grateful to Brian, Shirley & Anne, who in recent years have been very supportive of fundraising efforts on behalf of the Methodist Church (one on occasion allowing us to take over the whole of their restaurant for a Quiz Night). I hope that another Chinese Restaurant will replace it, since together with The Mandarin and Wing Wah, that will be three Chinese take away businesses the village has now lost in quick succession.

I think a sushi / noodle bar would be very successful. Anyone fancy starting one with me? I have no culinary skills or spare cash but I do have limitless enthusiasm for conveyer belts and Kirin Ichiban - if that helps.

'The Chilli Banana' Guy ?! I meant a proper Thai, not a fast food adjunct to a boozer.
Second thoughts, changed my fickle mind after a visit to Etruria in Knutsford. What truly fantastic food. Wonder if we can persuade them to open a tapas bar in Alderley ?

Glenn...have you ever been to the Chilli Banana? Steve and May have run a successful business for nearly 20 years and are always busy...I would say that's because the food is consistently good and the service is excellent. The Alderley Rose was a dinosaur from the 70's selling "vesta" standard chinese...it's now extinct....I'm sure it won't be missed by many. Not been a decent Chinese locally since Harrys in Wilmslow closed down in the early 90's.

I have been to the Chilli Banana on a few occasions and the food is OK in fairness. Never feels particularly authentic but maybe thats because its a Pub chain. Agree 100% with you that the Alderley Rose was a dinosaur and needed to go. Would also agree that we're missing a very good Chinese in the area. Find ourselves having to traipse into Manchester when suffering from Kung Po withdrawal symptoms - which can't be right !

I must correct Glenn when he says the Chilli Banana is a pub chain. It is no such thing. In fact, most people are of the opinion that, if it weren't for the Chilli Banana, the Kings Arms would have closed down years ago.
On the subject of the article, it is, indeed, very sad to see the Alderley Rose close down, but I must agree with most comments in that it has been on the decline for several years. I shall certainly be going for a farewell meal in the next couple of weeks! Another Chinese, or at least a proper restaurant, would be good. The last thing we want is another Pizza Express, or similar, or, as several have mentioned, more empty premises or charity shops.

Isn't it strange that one of the most affluent areas in the country has such a dearth of decent dining options....what does that tell you about the local demographic?

Bizzarely - someone was hand delivered a menu leaflet to my house today for the Rose - strange behaviour if the place is about to die.

A group of us decided to have a 'farewell to the Rose' meal there recently. Somewhere which has been a part (OK, recently a very small part) of one's life for the best part of half a century shouldn't pass away without some sort of celebration.

The food was mediocre, the decoration a bit 1970s (nice to see the lit up non-flowing waterfall scene is still there - I remember when it used to flow!), the muzak 1960s. We were the only customers in the restaurant all evening, apart from some take-out business.

Despite the above I'll miss it. It is unpretentious and that alone is so rare today in eating establishments. I doubt its replacement will be.
