Police operation will target dangerous parking

Parish Councillors continue to be very concerned about the ongoing problem of illegal parking outside bars and restaurants during the evenings.

Keen to have the law enforced, Cllr Mary Maczkowiak recently met with Sgt Andy Miller and PCSO Jim Newns to discuss the inconsiderate parking on zig zags, pelican crossings and bus stops.

Sgt Andy Miller told me "We are mounting an operation shortly to deal with dangerous and irresponsible parking, we will be taking an enforcement approach.

"This is as a result of popular demand as this is obviously an issue the people of Alderley Edge and the Parish Council feel concerned about.

"I will be heading up the operation, which I am in the process of setting up. We will be patrolling at key times in the evenings and we will be focussing on the issue for a number of weeks - then sporadically afterwards.

"We will be targeting parking in bus stops, close to junctions and controlled areas at crossings - some of these are offences and we will issue three points and a £60 fine.

"We will be targeting taxi drivers as well who are also causing all sorts of problems, narrowing junctions whilst dropping off and picking up."

Speaking about illegal parking during the day, Sgt Andy Miller said "We're doing a lot of enforcement. We're finding that giving warning signs is not working so we are going down the line of enforcement, particularly on Congleton Road where more serious offences are forcing cars on to the other side of the road, causing a danger.

"We have given out over 50 tickets on Congleton Road last month, we think a lot of those were to people working in the village as well as short-term visitors and one or two residents."

The police are also requesting that the Council extends the double yellow lines up Congleton Road.

Sgt Andy Miller explained "We have also submitted a request form into Cheshire East Council asking them to look at the issue as we feel the yellow lines need extending to where the double white lines in the centre of the road start."

He added "There are plenty of spaces for people to park in the evenings, especially by the Festival Hall but people don't seem to want to walk more than 50 yards."

Great, extend the double yellows so it gives a nice straight fast downhill run into the village........there's enough room to park on one side and have 2 lanes of traffic, just re paint the centre line and mark out parking spaces on one side. This would then give more parking spaces.

Couldnt agree more Craig and was in fact about to paste the thread into this comment from when you stated this previously. Surely it makes more sense now that the road is used differantly to start with a fresh set of eyes. It would certainy make sense to have the table top speed humps through the village and if necessary part way up the hill "Congleton Road" too, as in all honesty I even find myself accellerating (not too fast fast though) coming out of the village and up the hill, and yes Im one of those 4x4 drivers that many of you berate. There is also a serious lack of convenient parking in the village though. Its all well and good saying about Festival Hall parking but most visitors wouldnt know where it is and its not exactly quick and convenient if you want to stop and pick up a bottle of wine after a long day from Corks Out.

I recommend a trip into Poynton. At the main junction the lines have been removed and the junctions made uncertain. Pedestrian and traffic areas are not clear.

As a result the traffic moves very slowly and the accident level has fallen lots :D

We do not need more lines - we need fewer ! The village should get the same treatment as Prestbury and Poynton.

Any chance of sone enforcement up by the wizard or down Chelford Road. How about towing illegally parked cars away. A £60 fine won't stop some people.

Marc, as far as I remember, we had a large pot of cash to re landscape the centre of town after the bypass went in.......this money appears to have disappeared. All we got was the pedestrian crossings changed to on demand, and the 40 zone past the playing fields changed to a 30 zone.

They even got the new 30 zone wrong, as the placement of the new 30 signs appears to have been done by someone who doesn't drive. (You don't see them when coming off roundabout, plus no repeater signs)

What we have now is a bypassed town where the traffic runs too quickly, council and police still treating the roads as if they are clearways, and thru drivers choosing to go the town route as its just as quick./convenient
