More Speed Watch volunteers wanted

Police are inviting members of the public to join the local Community Speed Watch group.

The Alderley Edge group was established last year in a bid to address the issue of speeding vehicles in the village and has seen a number of volunteers trained in the use of a speed gun.

Motorists who are clocked travelling at an excessive speed by the volunteers are sent a warning letter, notifying them that if they are caught again, they could face a fine and three points on their licence.

PCSO Jim Newns, of Alderley Edge Neighbourhood Policing Team, has arranged the training of volunteers at Wilmslow Police Station.

PCSO Newns said: "The public response so far has been great. I would like to thank the volunteers for their commitment. Their presence is making a real difference in the community."

Since the speed watch scheme was introduced, 80 warning letters have been sent out to motorists.

In addition to this, Alderley Edge Parish Council recently purchased a Speed Indication Device which has been in use around the village.

The device displays the speed of a passing vehicle and records data which can then be downloaded to show how many cars have been speeding in the area and the times of day which are most problematic.

The police operational support team can then target the roads at key times for enforcement.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the group should contact PCSO Newns on 07948 522130.

Yet another example of insufficient police numbers on our streets. What next vigilante gangs lynching speeding motorists in the park.

"What next vigilante gangs lynching speeding motorists in the park."

Good idea. It would certainly be better entertainment than Celebrity Big Brother. :-)

Nick, police numbers are being cut by 20% so you can't be surprised that it's having an effect. I think it's a good idea to get members of the community involved. Don't you think it's good to try and help where we can with the local issues rather than just moaning about them? If it you are really unhappy about it then write to your MP expressing your concerns about the reduction in police numbers.

As stated before, this is just an excuse for policing on the cheap !
Quote ...........
"Since the speed watch scheme was introduced, 80 warning letter have been sent out to motorists" ............... but what is the point of that ?........... it's just a slap on the wrist !
Far better that people should be fined and given points.
(If I get caught speeding this week, it'll serve me right, but that is what I honestly believe)
We need real police officers giving real tickets, not civilians pretending to be police officers.
