Hole Farm set to be sold for affordable housing

Cheshire East Cabinet has agreed to dispose of Hole Farm, located just off Brook Lane, for the provision of affordable housing - subject to Crichel Downs *.

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: "The former Cheshire County Council acquired the property in 1975, along with other adjacent land and properties, to enable the construction of the Alderley Edge Bypass.

"The property is now, however, surplus to the Council's operational requirements and is potentially suitable to deliver much-needed local housing to meet local needs, including first-time buyers, for Cheshire East residents.

"The move is part of phase two of a programme of disposals for local housing across Cheshire East approved by Cabinet in March 2011.

"The Council is following recommended best practice and offering first-refusal on purchasing the land and buildings to their original owners at current market value."

* Crichel Down is non-statutory guidance which requires that all surplus land acquired by or under threat of compulsion is offered back to former owners or their successors.

Dare I ask what do they mean by 'affordable housing'. I just hope it's not going to be another soulless block of flats built by our local house builder. What is classed as 'affordable' nowadays anyway. I bet they will still start at silly prices so they won't really be affordable for those that would love to get on the property ladder.
