Woman dies after being hit by train

A woman has been struck by a train near Alderley Edge railway station.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the scene close to the station at 4.35pm today (Sunday 1st January) where the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The train involved was the 12pm service travelling from Plymouth to Manchester Piccadilly.

A BTP spokesman said "Officers from BTP attended the incident which was reported to the police at 4.35pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics also attended the woman, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Update: The inquest has not been opened yet so the woman who died cannot be named. However, BTP have confirmed that the woman was in her 50's and from Wilmslow.

I drove past the rear station approach (Panacea side of the track) at approximately 5pm yesterday (1st January) and noticed about 4 police cars, a police van and an estate ambulance and wondered what the reason for all the emergency vehicles could have been ... very sad to have read the dreadful news.
