Cheshire Police re-launch the Good, Bad, Ugly alcohol campaign

The Good, Bad and Ugly campaign makes a return this Christmas following feedback about the impact it had over the summer. Cheshire Police are re-launching the campaign for the festive period to drive home the message about alcohol and the potential consequences of excessive consumption.

This time the looks to avoid will be along the 12 days of Christmas theme. Each week in the lead up to Christmas the police will be explaining to members of the public the impact alcohol has on their judgement and safety.

This time of year sees an increase in the number of incidents Cheshire Police have to deal with where alcohol is the root cause of a crime being committed, for example drink driving, and alcohol can leave people in a vulnerable state as they are more likely to be attacked or become involved in a fight.

The cold weather can also put people in danger if people go out not dressed for the weather. Girls wearing skimpy dresses after having a drink may not feel the full effects of the drop in temperature at night and could put themselves at risk of getting hypothermia.

A clear message from the campaign concerns domestic abuse. The ugly truth is domestic abuse can be a result of alcohol, it is always unacceptable and excessive drinking is not an excuse.

Assistant Chief Constable Janette McCormick said "Christmas is a time for celebration. We are not telling people they shouldn′t have a drink, what we are saying is that it can influence your behaviour if you drink excessively. People getting carried away and having too much to drink makes them become a danger to themselves and others.

"Before you have that one drink too many think about how your night could turn ugly. Waking up in a police cell or a hospital bed is not a good night out and you don′t want to wake up on Christmas morning feeling bad."

Christmas is traditionally a busy time for Cheshire Police in December last year 586 incidents of alcohol-related anti-social behaviour were reported to police. This year, the message is, be aware of how much alcohol you drink to make sure Christmas doesn′t turn ugly.

The top looks to avoid for the 12 days of Christmas will be launched on the Cheshire Police website from this week.
