The new Edge Hockey Centre at The Ryleys Playing Fields on Wilmslow Road will be officially opened this week.

To mark the opening of the astroturf pitch, Alderley Edge Hockey Club are hosting a "Grow Your Own" day of sport on Sunday 23rd October, sponsored by the England Hockey Board (EHB) and Harvester.

Everyone is welcome to join an informal day of hockey fun and meet British Olympic players as well as English Hockey Board mascots Jasper and Jess and the Edge's own Eddy Edgehog.

The programme for the day includes coaching from the Junior Academy, a short opening ceremony and the 2nd round of the EHB Mens Trophy at 12.15 pm.

Meanwhile at the clubhouse on Moss Lane, there will be an EHB inflatable pitch for Quicksticks and The Cage to practice penalty shots, as well as demonstrations of Rush Hockey and Back to Hockey.

The cricket, squash and tennis sections will also be offering taster sessions during the afternoon and a BBQ lunch will be available at the clubhouse. A raffle will also be held offering the chance to win two Olympics hockey tickets.

Nick Rudgard, President of Alderley Edge Hockey Club, said "The pitch is fabulous and we owe a great deal of thanks to the National Hockey Foundation, Alderley Edge Institute Trust, Ryleys School and the many club members, friends and family who have helped us raise the money to make it a reality."

Alderley Edge Cricket Club teamed up with the Ryleys School to provide the new, purpose-built facility. The Club have financed the project through £100,000 raised by Alderley Edge Hockey Club members, grants from the National Hockey Foundation and the Alderley Edge Institute Trust and a loan from the Club's bank, whilst the school are providing the land.

The school will have use of the pitch during school hours and Saturday mornings, whilst Alderley Edge Hockey Club will utilise the pitch for coaching, training sessions and matches, for their mens, ladies and junior sections.

Please see our events calendar for a programme of events for the day.
