Spate of thefts from vehicles

Last week six vehicles in the local area were targetted by thieves during one overnight period.

Between the hours of 7pm on Thursday, 18th August, and 7.45 on Friday morning a new TV, still in its box, and an iPod were stolen from a vehicle parked on the driveway of a property on Chelford Road.

Offender(s) also broke into a vehicle parked on the driveway of another house on Chelford Road. Having stolen items they then attempted to gain entry to two further vehicles belonging to family members but were unsuccessful.

In Nether Alderley three vehicles were targeted during Thursday night. Offender(s) broke into a car parked on the driveway of a property on Welsh Row removing a sat-nav, in-car charger and a container of small change. Also on Welsh Row, £5 was taken from the glove box of an insecure vehicle.

Sometime between 6pm on Thursday and 9am Friday an insecure blue Honda Jazz parked on a driveway in Orchard Crescent, Nether Alderley was approached and a Tom Tom valued at £100 was taken from the glove box.

In Wlmslow, between 10pm on Thursday, 18th August, and 3pm on Friday cash and personal items were stolen from within an insecure vehicle parked on a driveway in Calverley Close.

What upsets me about car crime is that quite often, the police just give you a crime reference number and that's about it. It sounds like people driving into the area and targeting either quieter area's or those where they believe will have contents worth stealing.

You can't make an example of these thieves, as they think it's great. You can't show their face in the news, as they brag about it and show off to their mates.

There needs to be a deterrent so that they realize what they're doing is wrong.

I always thought that in countries in the Middle East where they chop your hand off for stealing was quite barbaric, but I can see where they're coming from. Maybe we do need such a shocking and brutal threat to stop this nasty and selfish minority who feel they can take something that is not theirs.

When I lived with my parents, our house was burgled and quite a lot was taken. My sister was about 5 at the time, they even took her child earrings and Ladybird books. She is now 26, and still gets worried at night on her own. These people have no idea how much long term damage they do.

Crime has to be dealt with and seen to dealt with severely, but prevention is better than cure. If a vehicle is unsecured and you leave an iPod and a new boxed TV in your car, what do you think will happen if an oppertunist passes by? There IS crime out there and we all need to be aware and use common sense.
