The 70th annual Alderley Edge Allotments and Garden Society show will take place later this month in the Methodist Church hall.

The competitive show covers a broad range of interests. In addition to catering for gardeners and vegetable growers there are classes covering floral art, cookery, photography, embroidery, knitting, painting and other crafts.

There are also classes for newcomers and children covering garden flowers, cakes and biscuits, painting, drawing and craft work.

Ian Copeland, Show Secretary, said "Last year's Show was very successful, for the first time in about 45 years it made a slight profit, much of this due to the kind support from sponsors and donations by local businesses for the raffle.

"Again this year, prizes donated by the traders are being awarded to each of the main classes. In addition, to encourage more entries for the five different classes of vegetables, the prize money has been increased to £10.00.

"Notwithstanding that the Show is on a more secure financial footing, entries are what makes the Show such an enjoyable day for all the family. If there are not enough entires, particularly for the flowers and also the floral art classes, the Show tables are not at their best, and it saves the Committee from having to raid allotments and gardens on Friday evening to gather up sufficent entries! So, if you have some flowers in your garden, please make some entries and let others see and enjoy the benefit of your displays.

"The entries for the Children's Classes over the last couple of years has steadily reduced. The Show is a day for all the family, so please encourage your children to make entries."

The Alderley Edge Allotments and Garden Society show will be held on Saturday 27th August at Alderley Edge Methodist Church from noon until 4.45pm. Entrance is 50p for adults and 20p for children. Refreshments and lunches will be served, the profits from which will go to the Methodist Church.

The show schedule and entry forms are available from the library or 01625 584445. The cost to enter is 20p per class, free for children, and entries have to submitted by Wednesday, 24th August, however late entries can be considered until 26th August.

Ian added "In an effort to help people with their entries for the Show, the reverse of the entry form has some tips on how to prepare exhibits for vegetables and the range of cookery items. By following these tips, people will have a greater chance of success in having their efforts rewarded."

You do not have to be a member of the Society to enter the Show, more importantly the aim of the show is to bring together the community and to promote and foster local interest in horticulture and crafts. Just to say entry forms need to be in this evening for all classes so if you've got some home grown fruit, veg, flowers, cakes, chutneys, jams etc that you would like to put in the show please submit a form - there are lots of different classes to choose from & the entry fee is only 20p per class.
