Police in Cheshire are launching a "Good Bad and Ugly" campaign to curb drink-related crime and disorder during the Summer.

The campaign, which was previously geared to the pre-Christmas period, is aimed at persuading people to drink sensibly.

The message is that if you drink too much you may put other people in danger but you will certainly be a danger to yourself. The campaign highlights the dangers of binge drinking, drinking and driving, underage drinking.

The hot weather often leads to people drinking more and drinking during the day, the campaign aims to inform people how alcohol can affect your judgement and leave you in vulnerable situations.

Assistant Chief Constable Janette McCormick said, "During the Summer people spend more time socialising. They are often outdoors in warm weather. They have parties and barbecues. It is very easy to drink more than you normally would.

"We want people to realise that drinking too much impairs your judgement and makes you take risks. For instance, people who have been drinking are far more likely to be involved in a fight.

"It also makes you vulnerable to crime and disorder. Victims of street robberies, assaults and sexual attacks are often people who have been drinking."

The campaign also coincides with the school holidays. Police Officers will target hotspots where under-age drinkers are known to gather. They will seize alcohol, take names and details of young people who are involved in anti-social behaviour and contact their parents.

Parents will be warned about the consequences if their children continue to be involved in disorder and are advised against buying drink for them - emphasizing the long-term health issues attached to binge-drinking.

Statistics from the national campaign against drink driving for the month of June showed there has been a further increase in the number of people drink driving and drug driving. This campaign reiterates the message that if you are going to have a drink then don't get behind the wheel.

The campaign will illustrate the good – this being people drinking in moderation, the bad – people drinking too much and the ugly – the consequences.
