What does the future hold for empty Wine Rack?

winerack

The unit at 51 London Road has remained empty since Wine Rack closed down in November 2009.

With nobody having taken on the lease in 14 months, the owner of the building, Perlada Properties, has now submitted a planning application to incorporate the store in to their plans for the adjacent buildings.

Planning permission was granted, at appeal in August 2009, for a two-storey rear extension next door, at 7 Stevens Street - providing a retail unit with offices located above.

The latest application for the site at the corner of London Road and Stevens Street is for two-storey and single-storey rear extensions, incorporating 51 London Road to create a retail area on the ground floor of approximately 295m2. The amount of office space at first floor level would be 298m2.

The application states that the retail space would create a single shop unit, for the selling of shoes by a company based in Heaton Mersey, which has, to date, traded via the Internet.

I caught up with Glen Berd, a fashion addict from Hale, who owns Perlada Properties and also set up Love Those Shoes in 2003, based in Heaton Mersey. I asked Glen about her plans for this development in the centre of the village.

She told me "There has been a change in plan. As the Wine Rack has ceased trading and left the premises, we decided to re-furbish the whole site to make one large store - so we have dropped the plan for the shoe shop and are currently in talks with prospective tenants."

At 295m2 it would be a pretty big shop - to put it in context, the retail unit would be 50% bigger than Costa which I understand is approximately 200 m2.

The recent planning application can be viewed on the Cheshire East planning portal by searching for planning reference 11/0161M.

Would be great to see some 'real' shops, e.g.hardware, haberdashery, shoe repair with key cutting service etc. The re-siting of the post office allowing access for pram pushers and the disabled would be welcome, but with high A/E overheads, I fear they would only survive with strong local support. Maybe it's up to us?

Another eatery? just what the village needs. How about a decent mens and womens clothes shop like Norton Barrie!

How about a greengrocer/postoffice, to go with the two butchers...
