Parish Council look at parking

The Street Parking Review was discussed again this month's Parish Council meeting which was attended by local resident Michael Taylorson.

Last month Michael submitted a proposal to the Parish Council for the introduction of a residential parking scheme on Lydiat Lane and Carlisle Street. He told the councillors that all day parking is "causing huge problems in many different areas, including from a health and safety point of view."

Michael explained that "We are not trying to cause a problem for local businesses, we are trying to achieve a sensible and fair balance.

"The whole raison d'etre was to mirror the Parish Plan and go through all the relevant authorities before looking to move this forward hopefully with the backing of the parish."

The Parish Council expressed their concerns that the introduction of residential parking schemes would just move the problem of all day commuter parking elsewhere in the village, and felt that it couldn't be looked at in isolation but must be part of the total parking review which is due to be carried out in Alderley Edge next year.

Councillor Williamson said "On a personal note I don't have a problem with residential parking schemes. This is the perfect time for the proposal given the consultation is coming up. We really do have the opportunity to decide whether we need to change the structure of the parking scheme."

Councillor Rod Menlove, Environmental Services Portfolio Holder told me "The review in Alderley Edge is within the context of the Cheshire East wide programme covering the 19 towns and larger villages. It will be the first to take place in 2011 and will be early in the year, although a firm date is not available as yet.

"The review is about parking provision covering both on-street and off-street. Parking bays have developed over the years during which time drivers parking needs will have changed and the most significant recent change of the opening of the by-pass may also influence matters and it is right to conduct the review once behaviour has settled down.

"The review will also examine any requests from groups of residents for 'residents only' parking in their streets. This is for residential roads with either extremely limited or no off-street parking availability. Examples in Wilmslow are Wycliffe Avenue and Hawthorn Walk where the residents pay for an annual permit at £50."
