Mark Steel is coming to town

A new series of “Mark Steel’s in Town” is currently being produced for Radio 4 and the second episode will see the comedian visit Alderley Edge and Wilmslow.

For each episode Mark visits a different town, or pair of towns in this case, and explores the history, people and peculiarities in order to establish what makes the place unique.

Mark then creates a stand-up comedy show for that community, which he will be performing in front of a local audience at The Green Room Theatre on Friday February 12th.

In addition to lots of reading, Mark’s research for the show has included several visits to the area during which he has gathered material for the show. Mark spent a really enjoyable day with our local historian John Wallace who gave him a tour of the village, including a walk up The Edge.

Speaking with Mark this evening I asked him about his first impression of Alderley Edge. He said “I have learnt that first impressions are nearly always the same because as you exit the station you are usually greeted with identical businesses like: Greggs, Clintons and NatWest Bank, but after a while you can get a good feeling for a place.”

“However when it comes to Alderley Edge I would probably say my first impression was looking at the adverts in the post office window. Normally you see adverts from local electricians saying “no job too small” but in Alderley I saw an advert which said “Ring me if you need a butler.”

“I checked in my local post office but there’s no advert for a butler, which is a shame as I need one tonight.”

I am really intrigued to see what Mark has discovered about our village and to see Alderley Edge through the eyes of a comedian. We are all fully aware of the media image associated with Alderley Edge but what Mark makes of the people who live here and the passion they share for the village will be interesting.

You can apply for free tickets to be in the audience on February 12th via the BBC website, or alternatively listen to the show on Radio 4 when it is broadcast in March.

We will confirm the exact date and time as soon as we hear.

I wouldn't expect anything more than socialist (he is/was a member of the Socialist Workers Party) bias and sneering sarcasm from Mr Steel.
