The 2009 school league tables showing GCSE and A Level results for both state and independent schools in England were published yesterday. Every year the Department for Children, Schools and Families publishes this data to provide a guide on how well a school is doing.
The GCSE league tables rank schools according to the percentage of pupils gaining at least five GCSEs (or vocational equivalents) at grades A* to C,
including the key subjects of English and maths. The percentage of pupils gaining two A* to C grade passes in science, is also recorded.
School | Pupils at KS4 | % 2 A*-C science | % 5 plus A*-C |
---|---|---|---|
AESG | 64 | 94 | 88 |
Wilmslow High | 294 | 60 | 60 |
Both Alderley Edge School for Girls and Wilmslow High School achieved well above the national average with the results for all pupils across England showing that 49.8% achieved five or more A*-C GCSEs including English and mathematics. This represented a 2.2% increase on last year and a 13.9% increase since 1997.
Dalton Firth Limited, who provide specialist data management consultancy, have produced regional school league tables for The Telegraph which show that AESG are ranked 2nd in Cheshire East, behind The King’s School in Macclesfield, whilst Wilmslow High School are ranked 12th.

For A levels, institutions are ranked according to A level points. A student gaining an A grade scores 270 points, B = 240, C = 210, D = 180 and E = 150 points.
School | Student Numbers | Average per student | Average per exam set |
---|---|---|---|
AESG | 212 | 918.2 | 225.7 |
Wilmslow High | 52 | 790 | 232.8 |
Again both our local schools achieved results well above the national average of 739.1 points per candidate. The 2009 average represents a slight
decrease from last year’s average score of 740.0.
This compared with an average of 727 points across comprehensives and 893 for independent schools. The results for all schools show that one-in-eight students across England gained three A grades at A-level.
The regional A Level league table produced by Dalton Firth Limited for The Telegraph shows that AESG are ranked 2nd in Cheshire East, behind All Hallows Catholic College in Macclesfield, whilst Wilmslow High School are ranked 8th.
Mrs Susan Goff, Headmistress at AESG, said "Our girls achieve excellent results year on year through their hard work and dedication.
