Alderley Edge Library hosted an awards ceremony today (Thursday, 8th September) for the youngsters who completed this year's Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to become avid readers.

Councillor Craig Browne presented medals and certificates to the 4 to 11 year olds who completed the challenge by reading six books over the summer.

Each year the challenge has a new theme and The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 was delivered in collaboration with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate to celebrate 100 years of one of the world's favourite storytellers - featuring some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.

Councillor Craig Browne said "I want to thank the children and congratulate them. I think they should be really proud of their awards.

"I would also like to thank their parents for encouraging their children to take part and the library staff for running the scheme again this year. The local authority is under pressure to save costs because of the reduced funding from central government so it's really important we inspire the next generation of of visitors to use the library to demonstrate that it is an important and relevant resource, as it has always been."

Ninety-six children started the challenge, of which forty-nine read all six books.

Librarian Janet Haley said "We were really pleased with how many children took part. This year we had a volunteer Genevieve Jeffcoate which was really good as children had the opportunity to talk to her about the books they were reading."

Janet added "The Roald Dahl theme was really popular."

Children who were not able to attend the ceremony can collect their medals and certificates from the library.
