No.15 closes after 35 years

Having served a loyal customer base in Alderley Edge for 35 years the independent wine bar has become another victim of the credit crunch, along with it's sister restaurant The White House in Prestbury. At the quieter end of the village many locals will miss the relaxed atmosphere and of course the warm welcome from it’s charismatic manager John Wheeldon. Having struggled to make money recently, owners Sand Down Limited are now looking for a new tenant. The lease is available for a restaurant/wine bar but given the difficult economic climate we could well be left with another empty building on London Road for the foreseeable future. I like many will be eagerly awaiting news regarding a new tenant.

Its a real shame that No. 15 has closed. It had a lovely relaxed atmosphere and great food and was a great place to catch up with friends. I wish John the best of luck for the future and hope that a similar establishment will soon find its way into the village.

The Wine Bar is an institution and it is so sad to see it close. I for one have been frequenting the place since my school days and have been to family weddings, 21st's, christenings etc there and have always been welcomed by Janet and John with a warm smile and good chat (even when 'our' chat was a bit ropey by the end of the night!!). The Wine Bar was so special in that you could always rely on great food, wine and a friendly atmosphere with no pretention (unlike some other places in the village) I've no doubt that John and Janet will continue with their successful formula in their next venture but I sense that the whole village feels a loss by the Wine Bar's closure.

That walk up the corridor proved your worth. Entering the bar, a novice may have felt as though they had arrived at church midway through the first hymn, but the provisions sign and a Hawaiian shirt always eased the atmosphere. Unlike other venues, there was no window seat to pout at passers-by, and plenty of opportunity to remove sunglasses once inside.
Working one summer behind the bar, I recall a car salesman from Hale approaching the bar to complain about a twenty minute wait for food. Our host ripped up the order sheet and guided the customer to the door with the words "turn right and keep going up to McDonalds in Wilmslow".
We will miss No 15 because, uniquely in Alderley, it gave us humour, quality and genuine care. Janet & John deserve our thanks, best wishes and continued friendship for the future.
