Mini triathletes raise over £2000 for Dyslexia Action

A brother and sister were joined by ten of their friends to complete a mini triathlon on Sunday, 27th April, raising over £2000 for Dyslexia Action in Wilmslow.

Ryan Vigerstaff, 8, and his 7-year-old sister Leila were joined by their pals from Alderley Edge Community Primary School, who are all aged between 6 and 10 years old.

They all swam 25m, cycled 1km and ran 500m to raise an incredible £2,239.60, smashing their original target of £1,000 with some bits and bobs still promised to them. This money includes £8.10 from Ryan and Leila's Penny Pot and 50% of their pocket money that they promised to donate.

The children were all very enthusiastic as they completed the challenge at Total Fitness, smiling throughout and cheering each other on. One of the younger boys had fallen off his bike the day before and hurt his knee, but he still turned up and managed to finish the mini triathlon which was a fantastic achievement.

Rashana Vigerstaff said "Our friends and families all really rallied to the challenge of helping the kids raise as much money as possible for Dyslexia Action in Wilmslow and although we have thanked them all, we want to thank them again!

"We were overwhelmed by the support we received from local businesses many of whom we had no connection to at all but they really got behind the event. They all gave so generously both in terms of donations to the fund and the masses of raffle prizes that we were literally inundated with! The raffle sales alone generated a further £500 to the fund."

At the end of the race the children all received a triathlon medal and a goodie bag filled with toys, books, chocolates, goggles and Dyslexia Action merchandise.

Rashana added "Ryan and Leila both said that they loved training at Total Fitness for the challenge and the best bit on the day was crossing the finishing line and ... the medal and the goodie bags at the end ! They also want to say a special thank you to their pals for joining in with them and helping them raise so much money.

"I am incredibly proud of all the children for their continued enthusiasm for the challenge and the sportsmanship they all showed on the day helping and encouraging each other on. They are all a credit to themselves."

This is the second time Ryan and Leila have completed the mini triathlon, last year they raised £625 for Dyslexia Action in Wilmslow.

All the money raised will go to the Wilmslow Centre of Dyslexia Action and will be used to buy new resources. Ryan attends the centre every week for a specialised 1:2 class and wanted to raise money for the charity that helps him.
