Call for parents to consider children's safety

IMAG1202

Parents are being urged to reconsider the safety of their children when dropping off and collecting them from school.

Following concerns raised by a local businessman, Mrs Susan Goff, Headmistress at Alderley Edge School for Girls, has written to all parents requesting that they refrain from parking in the area behind Aldeli whilst work is being carried out to rebuild Panacea.

Mrs Goff wrote "As you are probably aware, there was a fire at Panacea, the whole site has been demolished and is currently undergoing reconstruction. This means that there are a large number of contractors' vehicles, including large pieces of equipment, in this area. One part of the car park has also been closed, to allow contractors a place to park. The whole area also has double yellow lines.

"Unfortunately, some parents from our school (as well as other schools) are using this area as a drop off and pick up zone and Mr Higham is concerned about the safety of girls and parents using this area. He invited me to a meeting with the parish councillor last Friday and showed me the dangers first hand on site.

"I have promised them that I will write to you all and talk to the girls, to ask you all to be extra vigilant and not use this area as a drop off or pick up zone. It is not safe for the girls to be waiting there as pedestrians, particularly at the end of the day when it is dark and they cannot be seen.

"I am acutely aware that space is tight for drop off and pick up but nevertheless I must ask you please to reconsider the safety of your daughters and all our girls as this is paramount to me. We would therefore be very grateful if you would refrain from using the area behind the Aldeli to wait for your daughters as clearly it is not safe to do so there. Mr Higham has also asked me to remind you that the Aldeli car park is for customers only."

Stephen Higham met with Sue Goff, headmistress of AESG, and parish councillor Duncan Herald last week.

He explained "The whole of the back section of Panacea has had to be demolished for safety reasons. As a consequence of this, the job has become much larger.

"The contractors are having to gain access to next door via our car park and have fenced off Panacea's front and back car parks for the storage of materials. To add to the problems, materials and concrete are being delivered daily in large vehicles from the rear of our premises causing congestion problems.

"The net result of the above is to cause an acute shortage of safe parking around the school. We have introduced a one way system around the Deli to improve the flow of traffic but unfortunately some parents are ignoring the signs and using the Aldeli and petrol station as a drop off/pick up zone.

"Mrs Goff has promised to discuss the acute lack of parking for the school with her colleagues and we look forward to hearing from her shortly."

It will be ignored as normal. I can't see anything improving.

Sadly nothing will improve until a serious accident or fatality occurs.
This will simply moves the problem to other areas or increase congestion in already ridiculously parked streets close to schools.
This change at Aldeli explains why cars are simply choosing to block the pedestrian crossing point on Lynton lane, parking over junctions and selfishly choosing to park on double yellow lines up the railway bridge on Davey Lane. Brook Lane is now a no go area due to crazy parking. The area around the junction of Eaton drive and Ryleys lane is also truly hideous.
No idea what the solution could be but maybe putting railings, similar to those at the crossing on Ryleys lane, around the bends of main junctions near schools would prevent selfish parking allowing drivers and pedestrians a clearer view of the roads?????
