The history of Alma Terrace

As many of our readers guessed this week's photo challenge was taken at the bottom of Macclesfield Road.

The sign is on the wall marking the boundary of St Hilary's Park.

Harold Smith, Chairman of the Alderley History Group, told me Alma Terrace was a row of substantial 3-story houses, named after the Battle of Alma (Crimean War).

Jenny Youatt kindly provided the photos above, which she gathered whilst compiling the history of the school, along with the following information.

In 1876, the school began life as 'Alderley Edge High School' in Alma Terrace. The building was then extended in 1884 to provide a hall / gymnasium and extra class rooms.

The school was renamed St. Hilary's in 1913.

Alma Terrace was demolished in 1977 to make way for the school's new sports hall.
