Council needs adoptive families

Cheshire East Council has joined forces with other local authorities in the north west to try and encourage more people to consider adopting a child.

The month long campaign, which has the slogan of 'View life differently. Adopt a child', starts on Monday, October 29th. The initiative has been timed to coincide with National Adoption Week which runs from November 5th to 11th.

Cheshire East has teamed up with Stockport, Trafford and Tameside Councils on the recruitment drive.

Cheshire East needs to recruit at least 20 new adoptive families each year and are currently looking for families for 18 children. Last year Cheshire East Council successfully placed 23 children with adoptive families.

The councils are particularly keen to hear from people who are willing to adopt older children, particularly boys, and children with disabilities and/or developmental needs.

Councillor Rhoda Bailey, Cabinet support member for children and family services, said: "This new campaign is a really exciting initiative and through collaboration with other local authorities, we hope to be able to reach more potential adopters.

"Adopting a child makes is a truly life-changing experience and for many people it makes their life complete.

"I would advise anyone interested in adoption to get in touch with our specialist team who are able to talk people through the entire process and help them make an informed decision."

A special film has been produced where adoptive parents talk about their experiences. This will be launched at Barclays Bank, Radbroke Hall, near Knutsford, on November 9th.

I know a wonderful couple who tried for three years to adopt, they had a daughter already but could no longer have more children so set about on the adoption route. They had an almost perfect life to offer a child yet time after time doors were slammed and in the end they made the painful decision to end the process. So a child missed the chance of a loving family. Twelve years on and their daughter has just started University, her parents are still together and still living in their home, a home that was denied to another child for some mad reason no doubt. Another couple I know had to jump through every hoop known to man and finally after five years brought home two children. How on earth can it take five long years to give desperate children a home. At one point the fact they had two cats became a huge drawn out problem.
