Council investigates strong odour

Cheshire East Council are investigating the foul smell which has been lingering in the village all week having received a number of complaints from local residents.

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: "We are aware of the issue of a strong odour of manure in the Alderley Edge area, following several complaints, and we are urgently investigating the matter.

"Our staff have visited the area to try and identify the source of the material – which is often different from the spreading location.

"The Environment Agency sets the rules about what can be spread, where, and how much manure per acre. However, the Council has powers to investigate odour nuisance – and is doing so. Such odours are typically short-lived, however, dissipating with time.

"The spreading of manure on our Cheshire farmland is a common agricultural practice which happens a lot at this time of year after the harvesting of crops. It is possible the strength of the smell is due to a large number of farms spreading manure at the same time during the limited fine weather and the spreading time limits set by the Environment Agency."

We all know about Light Pollution, and Noise pollution... but now we have Smell pollution !

In may ways this is worse than Light or Noise, as they affect only a small area. In this case, the whole village has been permeated with this smell for most of the last week. Not just outdoors, but in every shop, office, bar, cafe and home... are there any health risks along with the smell ? I don't know.

If such a law of Smell pollution does exist, can I suggest the responsible (or should I say Ignorant) farmers involved are given the choice of large fines, or use a fertiliser that does not pollute the whole area ?
