What is that awful smell?

We have been contacted by residents from both Alderley Edge and Wilmslow this week complaining about the 'foul stench' which has been in the air for several days.

The smell has been reported in both Alderley Edge and Wilmslow and has been particularly noticeable with the warmer weather, when people want to open their windows and sit outside.

Clive Elliott asked "Does anybody know what the obnoxious smell around Alderley Edge is? - it has invaded our senses since Saturday and is still there on Monday night. Is it mushroom manure? Who has created it and where? Does it contravene public health and/or pollution regulations?"

Ann Adamson contacted us to ask "Can someone explain the terrible smell that has been lingering in the air around Wilmslow for the last few days. Surely this can't be healthy for the residents."

We understand the smell is as result of muck spreading in the surrounding fields.

Steve Marshall commented "They have "muck spread" the fields behind Netherfields, but the wind brings it as far as the village. I'm a chef at the De Trafford and it comes through the vents into the kitchen....not pleasant!!"

Marc Asquith added "We live on the edge of countryside - it's normal farm practice to spread muck - next people will be complaining about cocks crowing and sheep pooing in the fields :-))))) It's a great smell to remind us of our great good fortune to live in such a rural environment."

What's your thoughts on the smell which has been very apparent in the village for the past few days? Obnoxious or a great smell which reminds us of out rural environment?

There are two kinds of muck that can be spread, manue - animal waste and straw etc, smells of the country, ot human sewage slurry from the local sewage works, which is obviously much cheaper.
I think we are smelling human sewage. But heyho someone probably made a quick buck!!

Hi Mark
That was deffo cow based muck,we can put up with it for a couple of days for the privilege of a semi rural existance.
Treated sewage now has to be injected under grassland for animal feed.

Believe it or not but it is now LEGAL to spread Human Sewage on fields for Organic Farming. This Practice MUST STOP. It is a public health hazard (e-coli), is polluting water courses with Black Sludge and smells like a mixture of Stale Human Urine and Rotting Animals. Petition your MP to bring the matter up in Parliament.

Happens nearly every year though worse this year.
Rest of year just the smell of money.

It's chicken manure, I am told. Spread across the fields in Nether Alderley - and yes it was disgusting!

What can the Council do about spreading which does not follow the guidance and causes unacceptable smells?

If the Council becomes aware of unacceptable odours produced by spreading agricultural materials in a manner which does not fully follow the Code of Good Agricultural Practice then we will serve the spreader with an Abatement Notice if the council believes the smells are completely unacceptable and so represent a Statutory Nuisance as defined in Part III of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Yes, this is one of the downsides of living in a semi-rural environment however, I would suggest its occasional presence is far outweighed by the year-round beauty of our village and surrounding countryside. And yes, the smell is disgusting, but it will pass and not be smelt again for quite some time - I think some perspective is needed here.

I totally agree with Alison here, it's a fact of rural life..... Yes, it stinks, but let's get a grip!

By all means use cow manure, but not the other stuff. However I guess its like fine wine, not everyone knows the difference!

I think that in these times of financial stringency the Council has better things to do than fart around making a fuss about short term occasional bad smells. ( pun intended )

The phrase 'get a life' springs to mind.
