Teacher prepares to row a marathon

A teacher from Alderley Edge will embark on a gruelling challenge next week to raise money for two charities which are close to her heart.

Sarah Aldridge, 22, will attempt to row a marathon on Monday, 27th August, on a concept 2 rowing machine on Blackshaw Lane, where she lives.

The marathon will involve rowing 26.2 miles which will take her over four hours to complete.

Sarah, who has been rowing at university for the past four years, told me "The Olympic rowing course was only 2000m, so the marathon is over 21 times the distance, non stop. I have been training for the marathon for the past five months and I have been working hard for ten hours a week to prepare for the event. I have been rowing, running, and swimming to get fit for the marathon."

In her rowing career, Sarah has rowed the Head of the River at BUCS Regatta and Cambridge Bumps but so far the longest she has rowed continuously has been a two hour half marathon, so the marathon will be something else.

Sarah, who starts her new job as a geography teacher next month, will be rowing outside on Blackshaw Lane, starting at 10am, so people will be able to come along to watch and support.

She has chosen to raise money for Cancer Research UK and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as these charities are both close to her.

Sarah said "Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the UK. I know both family and friends who have been affected by cancer, and so I want to give something to this charity as it does vitally important work. Cancer Research UK works to save lives through research into cancer diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

"The RNLI have been there for my family and friends, keeping a watchful eye out, and providing an excellent service during all of the times we have visited the South West coast during the summer months. The RNLI saves lives at sea, and on average saves 22 people every day."
