New bench to honour Nurse Hatton

Alderley Edge Parish Council has repaired the memorial bench to Nurse Maud Hatton, which is located outside the Royal Bank of Scotland on the junction of London Road and Heyes Lane.

David Clarke asked the Parish Council to repair, or replace, the bench via a post in our discussion forum in December.

David described the bench as being in a 'disgraceful condition' and 'a complete affront to the memory of Nurse Hatton in its current state'.

It is believed the bench was funded through the parish and local well-wishers following the death of Nurse Maud Hatton in 1992.

Nurse Hatton was well known in the village, she took over as district nurse from her mother and is described as being a 'great asset to the village' by Harold Smith, chairman of Alderley Edge History Society.

Cllr Melanie Connor organised the replacement bench which was paid for by Alderley Edge Parish Council.

She said "I'm really pleased to see the new bench now in place. It's seems to have taken ages, but everything has to go on quotes, ordering, delivery etc. Plus it has to be a good strength as it is a well used resting post!

"Nurse Hatton is remembered fondly by many residents and those of us who didn't know her appreciate the sentiment that put the bench there originally.

"I'm really pleased that its in place for the Jubilee lunch and for the May Day Fair."

Parish Councillors take a load of aggro on many issues - but I guess we should say well done for fixing the bench. This is the sort of routine matter the PC is there to look after.

The seat looks lovely, many thanks. Nurse Hatton was a wonderful lady. She lived down Brook Lane when my brother was about to be born at home here in Alderley. She called on Mum and did not think baby was quite due but a little while later she decided to return, which was fortunate as my brother was on his way and the cord was round his neck! She did not have a car in those days, I'm talking of the fifties, so she did plenty of walking as well as nursing.

Di, what a wonderful recollection of a respected local who clearly still holds the admiration and gratitude of many who live on after her time. The bench looks like a fitting tribute to Nurse Hatton's memory. Nice work on this occasion, Parish Council. Thank you.
