Tesco are staying put

DSC_6071

Over recent weeks we have been told by numerous local people that the Tesco Express store on London Road is closing down and the lease is being taken over by PizzaExpress.

The rumour is circulating around the village, this week I have been asked several times a day by different people, so I approached Tesco for comment.

Matt Magee, Corporate Affairs Manager at Tesco, told me "It is a completely false rumour which I have discussed at director level.

"We're absolutely committed to our store in Alderley Edge and our staff, we are not going anywhere."

No smoke without fire? I would be very surprised if they closed so soon but I also think if they were in the middle of pulling out they would probably deny it in case it effects current trading.

I hope Tesco stay in Alderley Edge.
They have a good selection at competitive prices with friendy staff and great special offers.
The Co-op almost had a licence to print money until Tesco arrived, then the Co-op realised they couldn't get away with sky-high prices any longer and had to be more competitive.
Remember this .......... Tesco has helped to keep prices down in Alderley Edge.
If anyone leaves, it won't be Tesco.
They are big hitters with a big clout.
Others will close before Tesco ........... Tesco are here to stay !!!

I hope it goes. There are Tesco's and Asda's elsewhere if all you want is 2 for 1 deals and bargain basement prices. A small village doesn't need any supermarkets, let alone 3.

I agree with Dominic's comments. There is no smoke without fire! How did this rumour come about? Most rumours are true. Roll on the 11th August when Little Waitrose opens up.

Hmmmm, objections to supermarkets seem a little biased. If the basis of an objection is in opposition to the commercial greed of corporations, then the only one that qualifies for any support is the Co-op.

Rooting for Waitrose and against Tesco is purely a measure of snobbery. Both are out to make money for shareholders, one appeals to the masses, who are sometimes arguably defined as asses, and the other to the exiled home counties residents of prosperous Cheshire suburbs.

Big supermarkets don't care if they are propping up small sattelite stores which lose money, it keeps their name out there in the consumer psyche, so Tesco is more than likely there to stay. If anyone believes Waitrose is any different from Tesco in that regard, they are sadly mistaken.

I wonder how many people who comment on this site objected to the the multi-national franchised concerns which now line London Road but now frequent them. How many patronise the multinational coffee chain and not the smaller concerns? How many buy meat from supermarkets and not those local butchers?

I pass through the village on a daily basis and always try and patronise the independents. If you don't use them, you lose them. They are not there simply to add an elite look to the village for the benefit of passive residents, they are there to make a living for their owners and employees and need the investment of residents to continue to thrive.

Not biased what I don't like about Tesco is the way we had no choice re. if we wanted a Tesco plonked in the village or not, the scant regard they have for planning stipulations i.e times of hgv deliveries etc.

As I see it everyone working at Waitrose is a partner in the business good /bad thing? I've no idea but a bit more democratic. Co-op started as a co operative so possibly more fairly run but Tesco Sainsbury etc just want to ride rough shod over people for profit and sod the quality of their products chickens 2 for a fiver deals spring to mind.

As for multi national franchise concerns i can only think of the costa and I'm afraid I've a kettle n coffee at home so don't stop in the village for a coffee meat?

That's from the people at farmers market who rear their own beasts or local sourced. rest assured not all Alderley Edge is monied to the hilt some of us are born and bred here and cannot help that the village attracts a lot of wealthy egos who enjoy being seen in the village but thats been the same probably since the railway arrived. ho hum

You Edgers are a rum lot - nimbyism is alive and well. If Tesco did go it would be a pity as it adds value for lots of people in AE. Some of you seem to rail against 'big' companies' as if they are bad and small/local is good - I'm sure there is a place for big and small but you can't artificially skew the market - you can't tell people where to shop. AE will live and die by its added value i.e. why should I shop in AE vs whatever. Its not Brigadoon.

AE must move with the times.

What a shame. Tesco staying put I mean. They are the least conscientious of all the big supermarkets it seems they want to take over the world a Tesco on every street corner whether you want one or not.
