Hockey: Alderley Edge hit 8 again

Alderley Edge Men’s First team kept up the pressure at the top of North Division One, by beating City of Manchester 8-0. The fifth time they have scored 8 or more this year.

Edge dominated throughout with their fluent attacking and the goals came at regular intervals.

Ben Gregory was a thorn in the Manchester side and opened the scoring with a good finish following a quick turn over and counter attack. James Warburton was in the right place at the right time to grab Alderley’s second and Andy Taylor nipped in, on the end of a cross, to tip past the keeper for goal number three.

The second half continued in a similar vain with Barnes and Scarsbrook able to revel in the space created. Alderley looking solid in defence with Sawas and Baker-Brian at their imperious best and when the backline was breached Riley was on good form to make the required interventions.

Alderley stretched the lead when Warburton continued his fine goal scoring record, firing home in a crowded D, and the pick of the goals came from James McPherson - following a quick passing move, which stretched the City of Manchester backline, Warburton hit a long square pass which McPherson took in his stride and rifled home.

Warburton then completed his hat-trick when his drag flicked corner had too much pace for the ‘keeper.

Ben Gregory burst through the defence to create his own chances and deservedly got his second of the game and Alderley’s seventh. He also had another chalked off soon after. The scoring was completed when McPherson’s short corner strike went in off a Manchester stick.

The previous day Alderley Edge went down to Leeds 3-1, Leeds superior corner routines were the difference and despite having more chances and attacking possession Alderley could not take advantage. James Warburton was Alderley’s scorer.

The Men’s 2nd team had another good win, 5-3 away at Lancaster University. Karim Ghazanfar with a brace, Phil Benton, Sam Baker and Alex Morgan with the others. The result keeps them in the hunt for promotion as they are within 3 points off the top two, with a game in hand.

It was double celebration in the Women’s section as both the Ladies’ 1st and 2nd team played their nearest rivals and ran off convincing winners. 1st team won 6-1 versus South Cheshire and the 2nds 4-0 against Chester, maintaining their 100% win record. Both are now guaranteed promotion as champions.

Watched the game in glorious sunshine. The superior pace, fitness and mental alertness of 'Edge' were very evident. Promotion is so close yet so far away, down to fractions! AEHC, a really exciting team to watch. Let's hope its at our own pitch in the village next season!
