As reported earlier this month, local resident Christine Munro and Soroptimist International are organising an Alderley Edge May Fair which will take place in the village on 21st May this year.

Last week Soroptimist International and representatives from 26 interested local groups met at the Festival Hall where people were invited to make suggestions and contributions to what they hope will become an annual event.

Attendees were asked if they could help with ideas for park entertainers, parade participants, somebody who could open the event, sponsorship and marketing support.

The meeting was chaired by Christine Munro who started by explaining that the aim of the May Fair is to bring the community together. Christine said "Now the bypass is open we have got our village back so let's bring life back to the village."

The Alderley Edge May Fair will take place from 11am until 5pm with a procession departing from the Festival Hall at 1pm. They will march along Trafford Road, Chapel Lane and down London Road to the park where there will be entertainment, stalls, an arena and refreshments.

Initial plans for the day include; It's A Knockout and fancy dress competitions, tug of war, morris dancing, gymnastic displays, a crown green bowling and football competitions, miniature Shetland ponies and fairground stalls.

Christine Munro said "It was very encouraging to see so many people at the meeting from local schools, churches together, clubs and organisations, the Parish Council, fire brigade and many others.

"Since last Wednesday's meeting I have met with the Derek Griffiths from Cheshire Police and Andrew Latham from Cheshire East Council who have been very helpful and given us lots of advice about the running of the day. We now have more entertainers booked in for the parade and the park, and we are looking to organise the fancy dress parade.

"The next public meeting will take place at the Festival Hall on Wednesday, 26th January, at 7.30pm where those who attended the first meeting will be coming back with details of how they can help and be involved, and I am looking forward to hearing a lot more ideas and offers of help both prior to the day and on the day.

"As I said the object of the Fair is to bring the community together and it certainly seems to be achieving that."

Anyone who would like to get involved in organising this community event is very welcome to attend next week's meeting. For further information email Christine or call her on 01625 251753.
