Local resident Christine Munro and Soroptimist International are organising a new festival for Alderley Edge which will take place in May this year.

The Alderley Edge May Fair will be held on Saturday 21st May and many local clubs, organisations, schools and churches are being invited to join them on the day.

Christine Munro said "The event will commence with a procession through the village and onto the park. The procession will be supervised at all times with police in attendance and a road closure will be in force.

"The procession will include local bands, girl guides, brownies, scouts, church groups and other local clubs and organisations. Initial plans also include; fancy dress competitions, maypole dancing, a poster painting competition, gymnastic displays, a crown green bowling competition and craft stalls with demonstrations.

"The National Trust and Wildlife Trust, local environment and heritage groups will all be attending and the Historical Society will provide a video display of the history of the village for added interest."

The Soroptimists held a meeting last night where they discussed the theme for the event and for the fancy dress. This will be followed up by a public meeting at the Festival Hall on Wednesday 12th January at 7.30pm.

Anyone who would like to get involved in organising this community event is welcome to attend. All local groups and organisations will be invited to plan events for the day and they will be recruiting help from within the community.

Christine added "The Festival is open to all and people will be encouraged to take part in the activities."
