HSBC to close village branch

The HSBC branch in Alderley Edge, which only serves an average of 12 customers per hour, is due to close on 21st January.

Customer usage has fallen significantly over the past few years, as customer habits are changing. People are increasingly using branches where they work, or taking advantage of the 24 hour convenience of internet and telephone banking which has resulted in the Alderley Edge branch being one of the most under used in the country.

A spokesman for HSBC said "Our branch network is a very important part of our distribution channel and we are investing over £75 million each year on updating and improving the network. As part of this we are opening an additional 170 of our existing branches, including our Wilmslow office, on a Saturday to meet customer demand.

"We need to ensure that our branches are in the right locations for our customers and on occasions this means that we need to close some branches where customer footfall has fallen dramatically or there has been a shift in customer shopping patterns. Our Alderley Edge Branch is a case in point.

"We are working with the small number of customers who use the branch to see if we can help them reorganise their finances ahead of the planned closure in January next year. The three members of staff who man the branch will transfer to other local branches.

"Customers will still have access to banking and fee free ATM cash in the town via the numerous other banks and supermarkets."
