Sixth Form pupils Jennifer Metcalfe and Sophie Thomas, from Alderley Edge School for Girls, took part in the Northern Schools' Modern Foreign Language Debating Competition. The girls pitted themselves against some of the best Sixth Form linguists in the area and debated their way, in French, to the semi-finals of the competition.

All participants had to prepare both sides of the following motions: In the age of globalisation, the nation state has lost its power, The job of the paparazzi is immoral, Immigrants should adopt the customs and culture of their adopted country, The ends justify the means and Environmentalists are extremists.

Two French sessions were run simultaneously, as well as German and Spanish sessions. Alderley Edge girls Jennifer and Sophie won their sessions against Stockport Grammar School, Manchester Grammar School and Arnold School, and went on to the semi-finals where they were up against the eventual champions, Manchester High School for Girls.

Madame Backus, teacher of French at the school commented, "The standard of all the students' language skills was truly impressive and their debating skills improved with every debate. Jenny and Sophie overcame their nerves and rose to the challenge well, Alderley Edge School for Girls is really very proud to be represented by such talented students and we look forward to the next event".
