Cricket: U15’s honoured at awards presentation

On Sunday, 26th September, the Alderley Edge Cricket Club junior section was honoured at the Cheshire Country Cricket League (CCCL) presentation evening for a winning season which saw the U15s clinch both the Cheshire League Championship and the North Cheshire Junior Cricket Association Cup and the U13s win the CCCL Shield.

The U15 A and B teams enjoyed a highly successful year under the leadership of coaches Matthew Cheetham and Mark Alcroft. The A team won 14 out of 16 matches, winning the Cheshire League Championship and securing a place in the Cheshire Cup final. U 15 A team captain, James Cheetham was named CCCL U15 Player of the Year. The B team won the North Cheshire Cup.

The U15s achievements cap a winning season for Alderley Edge which also saw the 1st XI team win the Cheshire Cup for the second season running.

The club’s junior section played some 150 matches across the U9, U11, U13 and U15 age groups. In a highly successful 2010, the U11s were unbeaten winning both league and cup competitions and the U9s only narrowly beaten on the last game due to bad weather. In addition to the winning the League Championship and North Cheshire Cup, the U15s were also Cheshire Cup finalists, narrowly losing and thereby missing out on an unprecedented and deserved treble only as a result of having 8 key players away for a school national semi-final fixture.

Presenting the trophies and medals on the evening were Cheshire Country Cricket League officials Chairman David Humpage, President Bob Cunningham and Junior Section Secretary David Vallance.

Commenting on the season, Matthew Cheetham, U15 A team coach, said: "It has been a very successful season for both teams having won both the Cheshire Championship and the North Cheshire Cup. We are very fortunate to have a large number of very talented boys at the club, many of whom have already represented the club at senior level."

The junior section of Alderley Edge Cricket Club provides coaching for boys and girls from ages 7 to 18 and enters competitive local leagues at U9, U11, U13 and U15. In 2011 the club will be entering a girl’s league at U13, and will field an U18 team with a view to providing players for senior cricket.

Training plans for the 2011 season are already underway thanks to dedicated junior sponsorship from MediaVest and Pereto Law, along with the continued support of Physiofit. Starting in January, the Club will offer an extensive programme of winter coaching and nets designed to foster and improve every player’s individual ability, whatever their level. New players are always welcome and, whatever their experience level, are encouraged to contact the club to sign up.
