It was with great sadness and regret that Cheshire East Council have announced today that Councillor Liz Gilliland passed away in the early hours of this morning. The Conservative Councillor for Alderley Edge, who had been ill for some time, died at East Cheshire Hospice.
Councillor Carolyn Andrew paid tribute to Councillor Gilliland. She said "I was very sorry to learn of the death of Councillor Gilliland. Although I was aware that Elizabeth had not been well for some time, the news still came as a shock.
"I have known Elizabeth for many years, latterly serving with her as a Councillor for the Alderley Ward. Elizabeth was a most conscientious and caring councillor, who worked very hard for the residents in the parishes which comprise Alderley Ward. I shall miss her very much. My heart goes out to her family at this sad time."
Elizabeth Gilliland, who lived in Henbury, Macclesfield, served as agent for Sir Nicholas Winterton at Macclesfield for some time. She was elected to Macclesfield Borough Council in 1999 and went on to become Deputy Leader.
More recently she was vice-chairman of Cheshire East Council's environment and prosperity scrutiny committee, as well as a member of the authority's sustainable communities scrutiny committee and licensing and northern planning committees.
The funeral will be at St Thomas's Church, in Henbury, Macclesfield, on Wednesday, July 14th, at 2pm. All are welcome. It will be followed by a private committal ceremony at Macclesfield Crematorium.
