Village fete proves more successful than football

Despite clashing with England's World Cup match against Germany on Sunday, the second Alderley Edge Village Fete was another huge success. Nearly 2000 people, including those that came to watch the Hockeython, turned up at the Cricket Club for a fun-packed day with something for everyone.

Entertainment for the children included a fun fair, face painting, arts and crafts corner, Little Strikers football, apple bobbing and a lucky dip. Whilst the grown ups enjoyed the tug of war, laser clay pigeon shooting, laser golf and an adult penalty shoot out - as well as a BBQ, Pimms tent, champagne and strawberries, icecream and the bar.

The large marquee, which the previous evening had played hosted to the annual Cricket Club Ball, was filled with stall holders selling local produce, including gifts, jewellery, clothing, local brewed beer and the ladies from Fulshaw WI put together a fantastic display of home made cakes.

The open stage provided some of the highlights of the afternoon, where local school performances included the AESG Saxaphone Band, Alderley Edge Primary School Choir, Fallibroome Samba Band and the Amanda Cooper School of Dance.

New for this year, the hockey section of Alderley Edge Cricket Club held a 12 hour hockey game to raise money for their new astroturf pitch at The Ryleys playing fields.

One of the organisers Emma Bolton, who owns The Lavender Tree on Brook Lane, said "It was unfortunate that we had to compete with the football, but as soon as we realised this we arranged to show the match on two televisions in the clubhouse. We probably would have had more people attend if the England hadn't been playing in the World Cup but the whole day was still a huge success with something for everyone to enjoy.

Many thanks to Kelvin Briggs, from Alderley Edge Hockey Club, for kindly donating some of the photos.

"The idea behind the event was to bring the community together and give something back to a local charity so we were delighted to have raised £500 for our chosen charity, the Alderley Edge Festival which encourages children to express themselves through music, speech and drama."
