Wilmslow Prep School has taken another step in protecting its parent body from the Government's policy to introduce VAT on private school fees; announcing that it will carry some two-thirds of the 20% VAT charge, with a discretionary school credit.
The 11% credit will be applied to fees for the 2025/26 academic year from September.
The central Wilmslow school, which this year celebrates its 116th birthday, announced the new school credit earlier this year to allow parents to plan their finances.
When the VAT policy became a reality following the election last July, Wilmslow Prep moved quickly to reassure parents by carrying the VAT charge, which came into effect from January, in full.
The School's latest commitment further demonstrates their desire to do everything they can to support parents and provide reassurance against increasing costs.
Speaking about this, chair of governors, Diana Stephenson said, “Last year’s introduction of VAT left parents little time to plan, particularly as it was widely expected that the increase would be imposed from the start of the 2025/26 academic year, as opposed to part way through the year.
“That’s why we took the decision to initially fully cover the VAT charge. We have maintained our support for parents through our latest announcement of the credit for the forthcoming academic year. This has provided a welcome buffer for our parents.
“Needless to say, our actions have been well-received by our parents. The credit continues to demonstrate our commitment to WPS families.”
Wilmslow Prep’s senior leadership team and governors worked on contingency plans and spent time consulting with parents after the new policy was first mooted before last year’selection. This gave the school time to plan ahead.
The majority of schools have imposed fee increases in the region of 15-17% and others have, sadly, announced their closure.
