Winner should stick to making films

Cheshire East Council today hotly defended its restaurants and cuisine – and in particular those of Wilmslow.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, today hit out at Michael Winner’s scathing attack on northern food and his singling out of the Cheshire East town.

He said: “We are justly proud of the food and fresh produce of East Cheshire.
This is a rural area with first-class fine food. We grow it and we breed it – with animals for top-notch pork, beef, lamb and poultry. It’s wholesome and healthy and is used to supply fine restaurants all over the country, including London and the south east.

“We have a discerning population and, when you think of Alderley Edge and Wilmslow in particular, there are lots of high-flying celebrities with discerning palates who happily choose to live there and dine out there.

“Manchester, Liverpool, York and the Lake District, to name but a few, are all centres of culture and fine eating.

“What’s more, here in East Cheshire we have top chefs who live here and work to a very high standard in the area.

“I think Michael Winner should stick to making films.”

Against my better judgment I watched this programme - what a load of old rubbish! No better than Mr Winner's column in the Sunday Times - nothing more than self-aggrandizement and sensationalism.

Neither have anything to do with good cuisine, real food or an enjoyable dining experience - all of which can be had in many establishments locally. At least now we can go out safe in the knowledge that Mr Winner will not be returning to the area!

In response to movie mogul and celebrity food critic Michael Winner having taken a swipe at "ugly" Wilmslow, Cheshire East Council have reeled off a host of recent improvements to revitalise and spruce up the town.

The authority has schemes totalling more than £200,000 under way which are aimed at improving the facilities and appearance of Wilmslow.
