CCTV coverage under review

Alderley Edge Parish Council are reviewing the CCTV arrangements in the village following the vandalism last month when planters and hanging baskets were damaged and their contents flung everywhere.

There are currently three CCTV cameras on London Road but unfortunately they did not pick up clear images of the culprits.

The CCTV system has been upgraded so parish councillors, who have been informed the footage is going to be much better, are going to the control room in early January so they can see the difference.

Councillor Geoff Hall said "The frustration for us was that the incident that took place recently of vandalism appears to have occurred at the time they were switching over to the new system and training people on it."

Councillor Rachael Grantham commented "It was picked up on the old system, the faces just weren't clear enough."

Geoff Hall added "That's why I think it is really important we go and see it and understand whether it is actually represents value for money or perhaps we have CCTV operated in some other way. It is meant to be state of the art CCTV that they have just put in."

Alderley Edge Parish Council pays £5500 per annum to cover the three surveillance cameras in the village centre for a year - so they are monitored, maintained and replaced where necessary during the period. The cost will remain at the same rate for the new system should they decide to continue with it.

Although the images may not be totally clear, why not open them to the general public. You never know.
I wonder how Cheshire’s finest got on with this one!

The CCTV has to be value for money firstly coverage wise and secondly from an image quality, otherwise it is a waste of time. As with a lot of vandalism it can happen at night time when people are less obvious to be seen by the public. I am I am sure the councillors will check this when they visit.

you are 100% correct i.m.h.o.

I think it is a bit ridiculous that the Parish Council are reconsidering their CCTV over damage to plant pots but do no think it is feasible to have CCTV when people's car windows are being smashed by another vandal.

It seems that the importance of the personal property belonging to the workers in the village is less of a priority than the appearance of this village.

Grateful that my tax money does not go to this council.

We don't need any more camera's and definitely none on Ryleys Lane, we just want the one's we have to do the job intended.

Jon is right - we need the CCTV to work well and the Parish Council's review of the latest technology will ensure that this is the case.

Amy, the Parish Council is not making any distinction between one kind of vandalism or another. You will recall that the damage caused to the cars occurred at about the same time as the damage to the planters, flowers and hanging baskets. It is possible, I am sure you will agree, that the vandals may well have been the same in both cases. With better CCTV images it might have been possible for the police to identify those who think any type of vandalism is acceptable.

Let us all hope that we might apprehend the offenders in future.

What was the outcome of the CCTV review? Is the system working perfectly and fit for purpose?
There have now been two incidents of anti social behaviour in 2018 involving damage to plants planted by the ' Alderley Edge In Bloom ' group in the village.
As a volunteer for the group Ive just returned home from replanting dwarf conifers uprooted in the village last night/ early morning from the railings above the Waitrose Car Park on London Road. Just a thought that the person or persons responsible for this and the recent breakage of a container outside Royal Bank of Scotland may be budding film stars?

Wholeheartedly agree with most of the comments above that if the CCTV system is working properly, then the culprits could be identified very quickly.
What is the update with this CCTV project ?
