Plans to install telecoms mast at cricket club

A planning application has been submitted for a telecommunications mast to be situated within the grounds of Alderley Edge Cricket Club.

The new telecommunications equipment is needed to replace the temporary mast at the BT Telephone Exchange on Moss Lane which will shortly be decommissioned.

The 15m high telecommunications antennae will be for shared use by EE and Three UK, which together with the installation of five ground based equipment cabinets will provide 2G, 3G and 4G mobile electronic communication services.

Rachel Morrison, Planning Assistant at the Pegasus Group, explained "Without a replacement structure, there will be a coverage 'black hole' across the area. This proposal for new telecommunications equipment will ensure that the level of mobile coverage is maintained for Three and EE customers."

The application states the required height to the top of the installation is 15m which is defined by the nearby trees and buildings because "a smaller mast would not provide as effective or efficient coverage because surrounding trees and buildings would prevent the radio signal from propagating in an efficient manner, thereby significantly reducing the area of coverage".

According to the application a letter of support from Alderley Edge Cricket Club sets out that the club intends to use the funding from hosting the mast to improve many of the club facilities that have become dated and require replacement to cater for the expanding membership including DDA access and toilet facilities and replacement of the groundsman workshop.

It is proposed that the mast is located is an area which is currently used for storage between the rear of the BT Exchange building and the tennis courts - to the west of the main cricket pitch and pavilion buildings (see above). The five cabinets will be located adjacent to an existing concrete and timber fence.

The plans can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 17/4870M. The late date for submitting comments is 25th October and a decision is expected by 19th November.
