Parents call for traffic calming measures

A group of 14 local parents are campaigning for action to be taken to make Heyes Lane safer for children.

In the short term they are calling for traffic calming measures to be introduced to address the issue of speeding vehicles but their aim is to have a pedestrian crossing installed.

Michele Marr told alderleyedge.com "Heyes Lane is a major route into and out of Alderley Edge. It carries very heavy traffic, particularly at peak times when children are walking to and from school. However, there is no safe place for children from the East side of the High Street to cross the road to get to either the station for Wilmslow High or the school buses for MGS etc.

"The danger of traffic on this road is exacerbated by school buses dropping off at the top and parents' cars parked on the yellow lines to collect children from the buses."

Michele contacted Councillor Craig Browne a few weeks ago about speeding vehicles on Heyes Lane and the possibility of getting a zebra crossing installed.

Councillor Browne said "Speeding is clearly a problem on Heyes Lane, as it is in other parts of the village. I explained to Michele that, whilst I support the idea of a zebra crossing, Cheshire East is unlikely to be able to fund one this year. An assessment would first need to be carried out, showing that existing traffic speeds, as well as the volume of cars and frequency of pedestrian use, justify the introduction of a crossing.

"As an interim measure, we could look at introducing some kind of traffic calming, but it would help if Michele was able to demonstrate widespread community support for this, as well as for a new zebra crossing; hence my suggestion of a residents' petition. There is no minimum number of signatures required, although obviously the more people she can get to sign up, the stronger the message it would send."

Copies of the petition will available to sign at AECC from June 1st.
