May is always a musical month in the village and following hot on the heals of the Alderley Edge Festival, the May Lunchtime Concert at Alderley Edge Methodist Church takes place on Wednesday, 17th May.

Flautist Maharaj Meera and her accompanist, Oliver She will perform by kind permission of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

Meera Maharaj is now in her final year at RNCM and is a former member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She has also played principal flute with the National Youth Chamber Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and JRNCM Symphony Orchestra. In addition to playing in a range of RNCM orchestras, she has also played with the CBSO Youth Orchestra. In the 2015/16 season she was selected for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Professional Experience Scheme, resulting in performances at Media City, the Bridgewater Hall and in Malvern.

This year Meera won 3rd prize in the British Flute Society "Young Artist" Competition as well as being a finalist in the RNCM Concerto Competition. In 2016, she won the Dutch International Flute Competition and gained 2nd prize in the RNCM Solo Woodwind Competition in 2015, following on from earlier competition successes whilst at school.

Oliver She was born in China and raised in Brisbane (Australia), where he began learning the piano at four and received his AMEB Licentiate Diploma during his school years. He was prize winner in several nation-wide piano competitions, including the ABC Young Performers Awards in 2010, and has made appearances at Parliament House in Canberra, the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, and Arts Centres in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

In 2015, Oliver graduated with his Master's from the Royal Northern College of Music. His accolades have included winning the RNCM Beethoven, Recital and Concerto prizes, the London Beethoven Intercollegiate Competition (3rd), and the Brant International Competition in Birmingham, and performances in Birmingham, Nottingham and with the RNCM symphony orchestra playing the Prokofiev third concerto in 2014.

Admission is by programme, £5 available at the door. Light lunches are served from 12 noon and the concert will commence at 1pm.
